    An Open Inflationary Model for Dimensional Reduction and its Effects on the Observable Parameters of the Universe

    Assuming that higher dimensions existed in the early stages of the universe where the evolution was inflationary, we construct an open, singularity-free, spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model to study the effects of dimensional reduction that may have taken place during the early stages of the universe. We consider dimensional reduction to take place in a stepwise manner and interpret each step as a phase transition. By imposing suitable boundary conditions we trace their effects on the present day parameters of the universe.Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in Int. J. of Mod. Phys.

    Evaluating Productivity of Small-Scale Cable Yarding System Integrated with a Portable Winch

    Small-scale forestry operations, which are used in non-industrial and site specific forestry, provide alternative logging methods suitable for precision forestry approach. In this study, a small-scale cable yarding system integrated with a portable winch was considered as alternative timber extraction method compared to a standard tower yarder. It was aimed to evaluate productivity of this yarding method, which was implemented during commercial harvesting activities performed in a 10.74 ha black pine stand located in Bursa province of Turkey. The main factors (i.e. slope, yarding distance, lateral pulling distance, log volume, log length), significantly affecting the productivity, were evaluated based on two slope classes (34–50% and 50–70%) and two yarding distances (100 m and 200 m). The results indicated that the average productivity was 0.95 m3/PMH and 0.90 m3/SMH. It was revealed that the productivity of the small-scale cable yarding decreased as the ground slope and the yarding distance increased. Statistical analysis indicated that there was a significant (p<0.001) relationship between productivity and log volume and length in four applications. On the other hand, it was found that there was a significant (p<0.05) relationship between productivity and lateral pulling distance in only the first application (34–50% slope; 100 m yarding distance). Considering the volume classes of the logs, it was determined that the productivity increased from the low volume class to the high volume class

    Single InAs quantum dot arrays and directed self-organization on patterned GaAs (311)B substrates

    Formation of laterally ordered single InAs quantum dot (QD) arrays by self-organized anisotropic strain engineering of InGaAs/GaAs superlattice templates on GaAs (311)B by molecular beam epitaxy is achieved through optimization of growth temperature, InAs amount, and annealing. Directed self-organization of these QD arrays is accomplished by coarse substrate patterns providing absolute QD position control over large areas. Due to the absence of one-to-one pattern definition the site-controlled QD arrays exhibit excellent optical properties revealed by resolution limited (80 µeV) linewidth of the low-temperature photoluminescence from individual QDs. © 2009 American Institute of Physics

    A new meet-in-the-middle attack on the IDEA block cipher

    In this paper we introduce a novel meet-in-the-middle attack on the IDEA block cipher. The attack consists of a precomputation and an elimination phase. The attack reduces the number of required plaintexts significantly for 4 and 4.5 rounds, and, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first attack on the 5-round IDEA. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004

    Thermal conductivity and photoluminescence of light-emitting silicon nitride films

    Silicon-rich and rare-earth-doped nitride materials are promising candidates for silicon-compatible photonic sources. This work investigates the thermal conductivity and photoluminescence (PL) of light emitting samples fabricated with a range of excess silicon concentrations and annealing temperatures using time-domain picosecond thermoreflectance and time-resolved photoluminescence. A direct correlation between the thermal conductivity and photoluminescence dynamics is demonstrated, as well as a significant reduction of thermal conductivity upon incorporation of erbium ions. These findings highlight the role of annealing and stoichiometry control in the optimization of light emitting microstructures suitable for the demonstration of efficient Si-compatible light sources based on the silicon nitride platform.     Cultural Aspects of Attachment Anxiety, Avoidance, and Life Satisfaction: Comparing the US and Turkey

    Attachment insecurity can interfere with the experience, expression, and benefits of positive emotions, including happiness and life satisfaction (LS). However, both the pattern and effects of insecure attachment orientations on LS vary across cultures. Considering that attachment anxiety is higher in collectivist cultures and attachment avoidance is relatively high in individualistic cultures, the present chapter elaborates on the idea that anxious and avoidant attachment would have varying effects on LS in individualistic and collectivistic cultural contexts. Study 1 (N = 2456) involved a community sample of married couples in Turkey and demonstrated that attachment avoidance was a stronger predictor of LS than attachment anxiety in Turkish collectivist context. Study 2 tested the hypothesis that the roles of attachment anxiety and avoidance in predicting LS would vary between collectivistic and individualistic cultures. Mothers’ adult attachment dimensions and LS in Turkey (N = 89) and the United States (N = 91) were measured. As expected, results indicated that LS was predicted only by attachment avoidance in Turkey and by attachment anxiety in the United States. These findings are in line with the cultural fit hypothesis, suggesting that culturally incongruent attachment orientations have a stronger negative impact on individuals’ LS
